20 years ago I assumed the rate of innovation within the software/computer industry would slow down, much like the auto industry did once it had reached a certain level of maturity about 60 years after its beginning.
Today I realize that assumption was way off. Roughly 60 years after the beginning of the software/computer industry, the rate of innovation has now reached the point where it is impossible to keep up and it is necessary to pick areas to focus on.
In my experience the notion of free sharing of programs began in the early 1980's with the BBS systems made possible by Ward Christensen's XMODEM program. This willingness to share was strengthened by Richard Stallman's concept of OpenSource software. Add to this notion the technologies of the Internet, search engines and collaboration-enabling tools and we have a powerful combination that drives the explosive rate of innovation that we see today.
With this blog I intend to:
- Offer a perspective that those not so long in the tooth may appreciate.
- Reference tools by others that I have found useful.
- Reference contributions I have made, in particular to the Node.js Ecosystem which I consider a breakthrough technology.
